The Importance of having a Biblical World-View – Part 2:

The Importance of having a Biblical World-View – Part 2

Developing and Growing a Biblical World-View

Using Tools and Keys...
Laying the Foundations for having a genuine and healthy Biblical World-View.

Having appropriate tools and keys helps us accomplish so many things in life, much more than we could without them.  I am pretty sure you can think of many tools and keys that have helped you in your life. I am sure you could think of at least 2 right now, maybe one or two involving a screw driver, a hammer, and car keys.  Those experiences at the time might have been frustrating or even crucial in nature, but now, you might look back upon those experiences with a wee bit of chuckle or two.

For example, if you need to get into your car, and it is locked, you use the appropriate key (or electronic-key fob) which will then enable you to get into your car.  Simple illustration in which many of us can relate.

If I was trying to use a screw driver to spread peanut butter on my toast, that would probably not be the best, most efficient way of doing things.  But if I use the appropriate tool, in this case, a butter knife, I would be able to have a nice slice of peanut butter toast.  So having the appropriate tool and/or key seems to be the most efficient way to do things in life.

In the same way, the Bible, for most folks, seems to be all locked up, bolted down, in a sealed stainless steel barrel, welded shut and set inside an extremely secure location. To most folks, they think that only a chosen few (e.g.: pastors, theologians, popes, etc.) can understand God’s Word, and for the rest of us, it is just a mystery.  But I know God wants His own people, the saved, born-again followers of Jesus Christ, to love, understand, know, and obey His Word.  That might be very impossible if people cannot understand Holy His Word, the Bible.

I’ve discovered a few tools of the trade, keys, as it were,  that helped me to unlock God’s Word, to understand His Word with doctrinal purity and to be able to help other do the same.

The First Key… a person MUST be Born-Again (see John 3:1-36).
A person cannot understand God’s Word unless God’s Spirit lives in that person and is in control.  Jesus must be King, Lord, God and Savior in that person’s life.  If this is NOT the case, that unsaved, not “born again” person, cannot, will not, and will not want to understand or obey God’s Holy Word, the Bible, except,  maybe, John 3:16, that’s about it.  Case in point:

1 Corinthians 2:13-16
(13) These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
(14) But the natural man (the unsaved person) does not receive the things of the Spirit of God (e.g.: the Word of God), for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
(15) But he who is spiritual (the saved / born again person) judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
(16) For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?”
But we have the MIND of Christ.

The First Key, is that a person must be genuinely saved, truly born again by God’s Spirit, in Christ, according to the Bible, in order have the “MIND of Christ” or have the capacity to even have the ability to possess a Biblical World-View.  Christ MUST be that person’s Lord, King, God, Master, and Savior.  That is the ONLY way for the next part, the 3 P’s, to actually even make any sense.

The second set of keys… the 3 P’s:

To look at all of God’s Word, the Bible, it can just seem to be overwhelming, so many words, sentences, verses, chapters, books.
For many folks, they struggle greatly to make any sense of the God’s Word in the context of reality, in the light of real History, the Cultures and Time Periods in which the Bible was written over 1500 years, linguistic nuances, etc.  And then to keep that all straight, again, can seem very overwhelming, indeed.  It may seem so complicated that many give up and just listen to a sermon once in a while, read a so-called Christian Fictional book by some famous author and that is how they form their so-called “Christian” World-View.  But you can see how dangerous that can be, can’t you?  Thus, I hope you can see how important it is having keys that can help a genuine born again follower of Jesus Christ to understand, apply, and obey God’s Word.  Can you see how important this is?

I am hoping that the following key may help tremendously in your pursuit of understanding, loving, and obeying God’s Word.
Sometimes acronyms or abbreviations help me when I am trying to remember things.
Think of the various ways you were taught the “ABC’s” or maybe the way you were taught to remember all 50 States within the United States.
Some of the tools for memory were songs, sayings, abbreviations, or even acronyms – such as “A B C” Gum = (Already Been Chewed  Gum) for used Bubble Gum.
I am sure you could think of quite a few of these kinds of memory devices you were taught and have used and still use in your life for some many things.
Those are tools and keys, devices used to help you remember and do things in normal, every-day life.
So, in this same way, we can use these — the 3 P’s — to help approach God’s Word to gain understanding, and thus knowing God and His Word and His call in our lives.
I believe that if you can master the 3 P’s , you are on your way to multiply your effectiveness in gaining and growing a healthy, doctrinally sound, Biblical World-View.

The 3 P’s :

  • Commands from God
  • Clearly written and understood commands
  • Precepts, Laws, Statutes, and/or Commands

Example: John 13:34-35 (Jesus said:)
(34) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another;
as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
(35) By this all will know that you are My disciples,
if you have love for one another.”

Example:  Matthew 28:18-20
(18) Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I have received all authority in heaven and on earth.
(19)  Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
(20)  teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.
Look, I Myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”

Example: John 7:16-17
Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. (17) If anyone wills to do (i.e: OBEY) His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.”

You must understand and find out that God has spoken many commands, precepts, statutes that we, as humans, as a whole (all of humanity), and specifically Christians, are to obey.  Some of these PRECEPTS (commands) are embodied in the 10 Commandments (see Exodus 20), some are seen in Genesis 8 and 9  regarding human government and capital punishment (laws regarding murder and the punishment for murder – applicable to all people groups, not just Israel), and there are Commands from Jesus Christ (directly [in the four Gospels] and through His Apostles – see the book Acts through the book of Jude in the New Testament) in which we are to obey.  VERY IMPORTANT:   Some commands that God spoke only applied to certain people during a certain period of time, others applied specifically to a person or group of people for a one time situation, and still others only applied to certain people who existed long ago but no longer apply to us, today.  Your goal is to find which Biblical Commands of God, PRECEPTS, that only apply to you, as a born again, disciple of Jesus Christ, today.  WARNING:  We are NOT to seek to obey God’s commands to earn our way to heaven, nor to make ourselves become more righteous or holy.  That is not why we seek to obey God’s Commands.  We are to Obey God’s Commands because we ARE saved, born again, and because we are in love with Him (see Ephesians 2:8-10, 1 John 3:24, and 1 John 5:1-5).  If we are truly born again, genuine disciples of Jesus Christ we should have a desire, a hunger, an interest, a longing to obey and trust God through Jesus Christ (see Hebrews 11:6).  If you do not have this kind of desire, you might want to make sure you are actually truly born again (see John 3, Ephesians 1:13-14, and 2 Corinthians 13:5)

Understandable concepts, truths and normal repeatable ways of reality that we might experience or can experience.
Some of these principles are those of the spiritual realm that we might not fully experience now. Some Principles relate to things that most of the time are “true”, but some have exceptions…  God uses  abstract concepts and concrete examples to help us understand the “principles” in Holy Scripture.

Example: Proverbs 8:32-36 (God’s Widsom says..)
(32) “Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
(33) Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it.
(34) Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
(35) For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the LORD;
(36) But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.”

These are Truths, seeking to persuade people to follow God’s Wisdom, as well, they are stating the consequences of not following His Wisdom.  These are examples of “Principles” – that show us how to live life successfully and how to please God.

These “Principles” are not typically commands (i.e.: direct command statements), but they are statements of what is, or should be, allowing the reader to choose what is the correct, the best, or the God-Pleasing “choice”.

The FOCUS here, is seeking to see patterns of  human responses and reactions, and seeking to see the patterns consistently. Finding and seeing patterns of humans in their behavior, responses, and reactions to God, to His Commands and Principles from His Word, as well as seeing their responses and reactions  to each other, to angelic beings, etc.

Why? We want to see what patterns of behaviors, responses and reactions please God and those that do not please God.
We want to see the patterns of God’s behavior, His WaysRighteous, Holy, Pure, Loving, Merciful, and Just ways.
We, then, want to see those patterns of God’s People, those that God says are His People, and see how they pleased God with their patterns of behavior, responses and reactions to God, His Commands and Principles revealed to them.

The early church, the infant church … their pattern of gathering, or meeting:
–  –PREMISE:   They consistently met in a simple fashion, “Publicly” and from “House to House”.

Let’s see if this premise is based upon a consistent pattern of behavior by God’s People

Acts 2:46-47:
“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house,
they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, (47) praising God …”

Acts 5:42:
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Acts 20:20:
“… proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house …”

Thus, in this example, the pattern of seeing how God’s People, the early church in the Book of Acts, are seen as meeting in public gatherings (larger group) and from house to house (“in-home” small groups).  It was a simple pattern and God was pleased.

According to Proverbs 25:2  – – It is the Glory of God to conceal a matter, but it is the glory of kings to search it out.

God does, in reality, conceal His Truth from the  “crowds”  YET   strongly encourages His children (i.e.: King’s kids) to search out His Word.

So, as you are reading and studying God’s Word, please, pray to God, diligently seek God, to help you understand His Word.

  1. Seek to obey clearly written commands of God [PRECEPTS], those that apply specifically to New Testament Christians (born again, disciples of Jesus Christ). Yes, it is true that there are commands that are specific to ancient Israel under the Mosaic Law, but what you are seeking to obey are those Commands, Laws, and Precepts that relate to you, personally, in Christ.  As you obey God, you will understand His Word more, and it will become a part of who you are, and build-up and refine your Biblical World-View, more and more (see John 7:16-17)
(If you need more help regarding this, please refer to the following two articles: Criteria For Doctrine and The 7 Solas )
  2. Find the PRINCIPLES of God, choose the best, correct, and God-Pleasing choices… helping you see God’s Eyes in your life situations.
  3. Find the PATTERNSLook and learn from God and His People in how they relate to each other, the Patterns of those behaviors, reactions, and responses.

PRECEPTS, PRINCIPLES, and PATTERNS are an easy way to understand God’s Word and bolster the Mind of Christ in you (i.e. God’s Biblical World-View for you), today.  Then you can ask the Question… “Does this <fill in the blank> line up with the PRECEPTS, PRINCIPLES, and/or PATTERNS found in God’s Word or not?” when you are confronted with reality around you.  When so-called Christians and/or non-Christians seek to pressure you, persuade you, guilt you into believing in something, participate in something, follow something, follow human traditions that purport to be “Christian”, etc… you must first check with God’s Word… the PRECEPTSPRINCIPLES, and/or PATTERNS found in God’s Holy Word, the Bible (see 1 John 4:1-6) .

As you start to see God’s Word in this way, it becomes much easier to understand God’s Word, and it becomes easier to trust and obey God based upon His Word.

Live like you mean it, for Yahweh’s Sake,

God Bless,

Pastor Andy Thomas
